It represents the Egyptian goddess of war, destruction. She's the one who brings diseases and death, but can also cure (her priests often are surgeons).
In the myth of the Eye of Râ, Mankind rebelled against the king Râ. That one decided to send his Eye, transformed in the lion Sekhmet, to put down the rebellion.
Sekhmet slaught nearly all the men, and her father (Râ) wanted to stop the massacre. But the lioness refused. So Râ asked his servants to melt red pomegranate with beer, and flood a field. next morning, Sekhmet wake up and saw the field flooded with what she though was blood, and drank until drunkenness.
